About me

Hello There! 

Hi, I’m Xin Yi, a passionate math tutor and netball coach based in Singapore. My unique approach to teaching mathematics is rooted in the same principles I use on the netball court: discipline, perseverance, and a growth mindset.

As a full-time math tutor, I specialize in teaching secondary and JC mathematics, helping students not only improve their grades but also build the confidence they need to face challenges head-on—both in academics and in life.


My story

My Philosophy: The Math and Sports Connection

In both netball and math, success doesn’t come overnight. It requires a strong foundation, consistent practice, and the ability to adapt to new challenges. Just like training on the court, where you work on drills, strategy, and teamwork, math is about building skills step by step and applying them in different situations. My experience as a coach allows me to teach math with the same principles: setting clear goals, creating structured plans, and fostering resilience when things get tough.

My approach
 I use the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach to ensure every student understands math concepts deeply and at their own pace. Here’s how it works:

Concrete: We start by using physical objects or real-world examples to break down abstract math concepts. Just like netball players practice with cones and balls, students need tangible tools to grasp new ideas.

Pictorial: Next, I guide students through visual representations like diagrams, graphs, or models, so they can see the connection between the real world and math.

Abstract: Finally, I help students master the abstract symbols and processes they’ll need for exams, building the confidence to tackle even the most challenging problems on their own.

This structured approach ensures that students not only understand what they’re doing, but also why—leading to deeper learning and better exam results.
